Bibliography of the Works of Sir John Evans

Reflecting, no doubt, the esteem in which he was held on both sides of the Channel, a review of Evans's life, together with a bibliography of his works was published within a year of his death by Leonard Forrer, with the title Sir John Evans, KCB, 1823-1908: Biographie et Bibliographie (Chalon-sur-Saône, 1909). A number of items have come to light since that time and have been added to the list reproduced below, while a greater number of Forrer's citations have been omitted: on inspection, these proved to be little more than references to the fact that Evans had talked on some subject or exhibited some object (usually to the Society of Antiquaries) but without further details. Notices in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of London that certain papers would be published by Evans in the Society's more substantial Archaeologia series are similarly omitted.

References to substantive articles are given here with their titles in quotation marks, while other contributions which are reported at some length but in more oblique fashion are given titles in square brackets to indicate their content. Article titles given in Forrer's publication tend to be taken from the index volumes of the journals concerned and are often paraphrases of those given in the primary text rather than exact transcriptions; the original wording of the titles is restored here. Monograph titles are given in italics. It may be noted that these range from the major works for which Evans is justly renowned to the texts of lectures which have been delivered to various audiences and which subsequently have been typeset at the initiative of Evans himself or the body which had sponsored the talk.

The list is arranged first chronologically and then alphabetically, with books and independently printed pamphlets preceding articles in journals. Where the papers and proceedings in journals span several years, the article will be found under the latest of these years as recorded on the title-page, which may or may not be the year in which the paper was delivered or the year in which the journal was published.
