John Evans was born on 17 November 1823, the second son of the Revd Arthur Benoni Evans and his wife Anne. At the age of 17, instead of going to University as he had hoped and planned, having been entered for Brasenose College, John Evans went to work in the paper mills of his uncle, John Dickinson, at Nash Mills, Hemel Hempstead, where he remained until retirement. He was one of the most distinguished Victorian archaeologists and made his name as an antiquary and numismatist. Evans died at Berkhamsted on 31 May 1908, aged 85 after a short illness.
