Sir John Evans's collection and papers

The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford holds much of the Sir John Evans collection and his documentary archive.

The Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford holds some artefacts from Evans's collection, reflecting his interest in ethnography, which he used for comparative purposes. For more details see the Pitt Rivers page.

The Museum of the History of Science in Oxford was co-founded by Lewis Evans (John Evans's son) with Lewis's collection of scientific instruments and manuscripts.

The Sackler Library in Oxford also holds Evans's book collection.

John Evans's intellectual links

National Museum (Nationalmuseet) in Copenhagen, Denmark, houses 14,000 years of Danish prehistory, with objects dating from the Upper Paleolithic through to the Iron Age, which was one of John Evans's interests. Coincidentally, the prehistory department of the museum has been refurbished and re-opened in May 2008, the centenary of Evans's death.

The Greenwell Project explores the life and works of William Greenwell. It was based in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Durham.

The Darwin Correspondance Project is completing the publishing of a definitive edition of the letters to and from Charles Darwin. The website includes an online datebase and the project has identified correspondance between Charles Darwin and John Evans.
