HM Queen Margrethe II of Denmark graciously accepted extended her patronage to the Sir John Evans Centenary Project.

This was an exceptional honour for the Ashmolean Museum and for the University of Oxford.

Queen Margrethe is well known for her interest in archaeology. Her Majesty is president of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of the North, Royal Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and patron of the International Association of Classical Archaeology. Her first university degree was in archaeology.

Queen Margrethe has very close relations with Britain. She received part of her education here, both at school and at university (Cambrige and London School of Economics). She holds honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Cambridge, London, Oxford, and Edinburgh.

She supports Danish-British relations and has honorary freedom of the City of London. She also has a special connection to particular British defence units: in 1972, Her Majesty was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of The Queen's Regiment, and in 1992 became Colonel-in-Chief of The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment.

The project also has the support of the Royal Danish Embassy in London.
